Borneo Unbound: Navigating Kalimantan In Flux

Kuching, 26 July 2023: Sarawak Centre of Performance Excellence (SCOPE) has
commenced their new talk series “SCOPE Distinguished Speakers’ Series”, which will
champion the three pillars of Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, namely
Economic Prosperity, Social Inclusivity and Environmental Sustainability. SCOPE is fully
committed to supporting the State’s initiatives and strategic development of becoming a
thriving society by 2030 through PCDS 2030.


This series features specially curated speakers from private and public sectors who will share
insights as well as research findings on challenges that relate to Economic, Sustainability, the
Environment, Social Welfare and Planetary Health. “This dynamic platform sets out to make
a difference to the world and we invite you to join us on this journey” as mentioned by Joseph
Lim, CEO SCOPE.


The first program to the series, Borneo Unbound: Navigating Kalimantan in Flux which
highlights on “Environmental Sustainability” is organised on 26th July 2023 at SCOPE’s
Auditorium. The invited speaker for the program is Dr Goh Chun Seng.


Dr Goh is an Associate at Harvard Asia Center. He has developed a strong affinity for the
unique sustainability challenges and opportunities presented by Borneo. He has also authored
reports for United Nation-Food & Agriculture Organization, International Renewable Energy
Agency (IRENA) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).


Dr Goh talks on the rapid transformations that has unfolded in Kalimantan, specifically in the
North and East Kalimantan. He also explores on the dynamic landscape of infrastructure
development, economic activities, and environmental changes, providing valuable insights
into the driving forces that shape the region.


In addition, Dr Goh delves into the profound social, economic and environmental implications
and addresses the critical issues concerning indigenous communities, biodiversity, land use
and sustainable development. He also shares on the strategies and approaches that aims at
promoting sustainable development and resilience amidst the rapid changes by drawing on
compelling case studies.


The program was attended by 51 participants from various sectors including the Sarawak Civil
Services, State Statutory Body, Government-Link Companies and the Corporate sectors.
