Kuching, 2nd November 2023: Sarawak Centre of Performance Excellence (SCOPE) returns with their third instalment of “SCOPE Distinguished Speakers’ Series”, with the program “Reversing The Irreversible Donut Economy & Planetary Health to Safeguard Our Future”. As a recap, SCOPE Distinguished Speakers’ Series features specially curated speakers from private and public sectors who will share insights as well as research findings on challenges that relate to Economic, Sustainability, the Environment, Social Welfare and Planetary Health and other related topics.
The third program to the series, Reversing the Irreversible Donut Economy & Planetary Health to Safeguard Our Future, explores into the topics of Donut Economy and Planetary Health. The program is organised on 2nd November 2023 at SCOPE’s Jasmine and Orchid Room. The invited speaker for the program is Prof Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, Executive Director, Centre for Planetary Health, Sunway University.
Prof Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood is a medical professional with more than two decades of experience managing crises in health, disasters and conflict settings. She is currently Professor and Executive Director of the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health at Sunway University in Malaysia. She holds advisory council roles in the Government of Malaysia in Foreign Policy, Health and Climate Change. She is also the sustainability advisor at Air Asia and the national advisor of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society. Globally, she is a member of the board of Roche in Switzerland and the Norwegian Refugee Council, a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council of Responsible Resource Use and a Global Ambassador for the Humanitarian Grand Bargain. She is a strong advocate of planetary health and sustainability and actively advises on Environment, Social and Governance in the advisory and board roles she holds.
During the session, Prof Tan Sri Dr Jemilah talks on Planetary Health and the Planetary Boundaries as well as briefly introduces Doughnut Economics to the attendees. The session delves into the field of planetary health, which is a systems approach to solving some of our greatest existential challenges. By understanding planetary health and the planetary health action plan the nation is embarking upon, we will have a basic understanding of how to apply the principles in policy development, programs, and strategies.
The program was attended by Datu Buckland Bangik, the Deputy State Secretary (Administration), Mr Morshidi Frederick, Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, as well as participants from various sectors including the Sarawak Civil Services, Government-Link Companies and private sectors.
